| IMPORTANT REMINDER: Please pay your annual subscription fee as soon as possible and join the BGM/Scientific Meeting on 6 May 1999 in Sheraton Hotel. Thanks. |
Dear Members,
In less than 6 weeks' time, the present Council will complete their terms of office for 97-99. It is timely for us to take stock of the business of the Society in the last two years so that we can reflect on our past efforts and then conceptualise our tactics to welcome the new millennium which is only 9 months away.
With the downturn of Hong Kong economy since the "Asian financial crisis" in October 1997, it is anticipated that sponsorships for hosting scientific meetings will not be so easy to come by as before. To maintain this very popular and important CME activity, your Society will actively seek to work even more closely with fellow societies/associations with related interest to organise joint functions. Members should have received an invitation to attend a seminar on osteoporosis co-organised with the Hong Kong Society for the Study of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Reproduction. Preparation is also underway to conduct a Workshop in Perinatology with the Hong Kong Society of Neonatal Medicine in June-July.
The Editorial Board of the Hong Kong Journal of Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Midwifery has now been formed (please see list of editors on page 2). Members are encouraged to submit articles for consideration of publication in your own Journal. Details of Instruction for Authors will be sent to you later. The inaugural issue is schedule to be printed by July this year. We thank Wyeth (HK) Ltd for participating as the sole sponsor of the first two issue of our Journal. The Medi Communications Ltd has been appointed as our publisher. The executive members of the Editorial Board from your Society and the Hong Kong Midwives Association will be working hard in the coming months to ensure the Journal will arrive at your desk on schedule.
In collaboration with the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Hong Kong Tourist Association, the bidding document for hosting the FIGO Congress in 2006 has been completed and sent to the Congress Bureau last month. Bidding documents from other competing countries are now being reviewed by FIGO. A field visit to Hong Kong will be conducted by members of the Bureau in later half of this year. Members may be interested to know that our local Preliminary Organising Committee is headed by Professor PC Ho as the Chairman with Dr. LC Ho as Treasurer and myself as Secretary. Professor Tony Chung is Chairman of the Scientific Committee. Dr. Vivian Wong is Chairman of PR/ Promotion/Marketing Committee and Dr. Joseph Woo is the Chairman of the Social/Hospitality Committee. Other Committee members include Dr. Dominic Li, Dr. Leung Wing Cheung and representatives from Hong Kong Tourist Association--Ms Tina Cheng and Ms Margaret Leung. If you have any suggestions which can help with the bidding process, please do not hesitate to let me know and make this major project a successful one for Hong Kong.
A new website has been specially created for the bid. This is at: http://www.medicine.org.hk/ogshk/figocongress2006.
Please check it out if you are interested.
To better serve our community, your Society has conducted a series of health education talks. Thanks to all those members who volunteer as speakers. All these talks are well attended and well received by the public. The telephone hotline of the Society is also in operation (telephone number 25998333) and public can listen to health information over the phone. Your Vice President, Dr. Dominic Li, is closely monitoring the operation of the hotline and will re-evaluate the logistics in 2 months' time. The draft of an information booklet on menopausal health is now being examined by the Council for publication.
Looking ahead, I strongly believe that our Society can continue to success-fully fulfil its present role in the 21st century and celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2001. The publication of its own Journal will further enhance its image and identity. I would like to see our Society to adopt an even more assertive approach towards public education on all aspects of women's health and serve as an information resource "centre" for the community. For those who would like to help steer the way, you will find the nomination form for the Council 1999-2001 enclosed in this newsletter useful. For those who would like to contribute in "the usual manner", kindly be reminded to send in your annual registration fee and give your Society a financial boost.
Do look forward to see you all at the Biennial General Meeting on 6th May.
Your President,
Lawrence Tang.

As all of your may notice, there was not many scientific meetings in the first quarter of 1999. Due to the economic downturn, many companies are not willing to sponsor scientific meeting. As spelled out by the President, we will try explore new sponsors and to jointly organise meeting will related Societies such as the Society of Neonatal Medicine etc. The last scientific meeting was held in conjunction with the Society for the Study of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Reproduction on 29th March 1999 in Great Eagle Hotel. The speaker was Professor John P. Bilezikian, who delivered an excellent lecture on the "New paradigm for Prevention of Osteoporosis". Our next scientific meeting cum BGM will be held on 6th May 1999 in Sheraton Hotel and all members are cordially invited to attend both functions. Cocktail will start at 6 pm followed by BGM (6:30 to 7:30 pm), dinner (7:30 to 8:30 pm) and lecture (8:30 to 9:30 pm). Professor Henry Kitchener from Manchester will deliver a lecture on the Management of Cervical Cancer. The venue and dinner are generously sponsored by Mead Johsnon Nutritionals.
Other scientific meeting under preparation included (preliminary data only):
| 1 June 1999 | Talk on a new bone sparing drug -- Eli Lily Co mid |
| July 99 | Talk on female urology in conjunction with Continence Society -- Upjohn Co |
| 29 July 99 | Talk on HRT Dr. Morris Notelovitz President Emeritus Women's Medical and Diagnostic Centre, Gainesville, Florida, USA-- Swire Loxley |
In November 1998, the Society has jointly organised a meeting with Society of Neonatal Medicine on Group B Streptococcal Infection. Dr. Wong Hong Soo, Consultant of Princess Margaret Hospital, has kindly summarised her talk and was enclosed in the appendix.
The Society was regularly invited to give talk to public and any members who is interested are welcome to contribute. Please give your name to the Honorary Secretary.
In the coming Mother Day (May 8-9), the Society will organise a small exhibition in the Kowloon City Plaza on menopausal health. Any member is welcome to join.
The annual subscription fee for 1999 is now due. Please prepare a cheque of HK$400 (cheque in favour of the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Hong Kong) and send to Dr. Catherine Siu, Room 710, Hang Shing Building, 363-373 Nathan Road, Kowloon. Please write down your name, address and phone number on the back of your cheque and make sure the spelling of the O&G Society is correct. For those life members and those members who have already paid the 1999 annual fee do not need to take any action. For all those who have not paid, please send in your cheque at your earliest convenience. The financial well being of the Society depends on all of your support.
