Newsletter October 2001

Message from the President

Dear members,

This is the first newsletter of the new Council Session 2001-2003. The list of members of the new Council and the minutes of the BGM were posted on the web page of the Society for your perusal (http://www.medicine.org.hk/ogshk/home.htm). The Hon Secretary report by Dr SK Lam for the Session 1999-2001 gave a very detail summary of our work in these two years. All members are welcomed to refresh your memories by browsing through our web pages.

This year we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Society. We are planning a number of activities to commemorate this occasion. The first event was a Press Conference on World Menopause Day that was held on October 17,2001. This was to promote public interest on the importance of women's health after menopause. During the meeting, I briefed the media about some local statistics on menopause and the low incidence of patients on hormonal replacement therapy. Dr Leung Tung Yeung, Director of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Well Women Clinics, gave a short lecture on symptomatology, long term complications and management of menopause. This message was well covered by the newspapers, radio and television stations. I must thank Drs LC Ho, Robert Chin, TK Sum and Sue Lo of the Hong Hong Family Planning Association in helping us to prepare for the media briefing. This press conference was sponsored by Wyeth (HK) Ltd.

Under the capable leadership of Dr Lawrence Tang, the second issue of the Journal of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Midwifery was published and members should have received it last month. This journal was well received by our members as well as colleagues from other specialties. We are striving for its existence, both scientifically and financially. Please help us by contributing to the journal and inform me of any potential sponsors who will support our journal.

With the present political and economical environment of Hong Kong, all of us are working under a lot of pressure, whether you are working in the private or public sector. Let us hold our hands together and work hard to uphold our professional standard towards better health for women in Hong Kong.

Perinatal Chapter

After the long gestation, the Perinatal Chapter was born as a joint group under The Obstetrical & Gynaecological Society of Hong Hong and The Hong Kong Society of Neonatal Medicine. The inauguration symposium on 10.11.2001 was very successful. We were honoured to have the international authorities in perinatology to witness the event. Our next steps forward include the preparation of our constitution, joining the FAOPS, and the joint functions between the two Societies.
