This is the first newsletter after our Council has been elected on the 3 rd May 2005. It is an honour for me and the other office bearers/council members to serve the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Hong Kong (OGSHK), which is one of the two largest O&G organizations in Hong Kong. Taking the long history of OGSHK (formed in 1961, now 43 years) and the excellent track record of our past Council, it will be a difficult job for us to maintain the same level of activity and service to our members. It is particularly difficult because of the manpower stress in public hospitals and every office bearers (be it in public or private section) have to contribute the precious spare time for the work of the Society.
The objective and direction of OGSHK is slightly different from that of Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, although most members may belong to both organizations. The College is more concentrated on the education and training of obstetrics and gynaecology, examination and setting of standard/accreditation of units and special skill and preparation of clinical guidelines etc, whereas the Society is more involved in the organization of the CME activities and social function. By history, the OGSHK is still representing Hong Kong in two international societies namely the Asia Oceania Federation of O&G (AOFOG) and the International Federation of O&G (FIGO). There will be an AOFOG meeting (XIXth Asian Oceania Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology held in Seoul 1 to 5 October 2005) and all the members of the OGSHK are encouraged to attend. Further information can be obtained from the following website www.aocog2005.org. The next FIGO meeting will be held in 2006 in Kuala Lumpur and further detail is available from the following website www.figo2006kl.com.
From 18 to 21 July 2005, I attended the first AOGIN (Asia Oceania Organization on the Research of Genital Tract Infection and Neoplasia) in Sabah, Malaysia (together with Dr. TH Cheung, Dr. Annie Cheung-pathologist, Prof. Paul Chan-microbiologist). AOGIN is a similar organization as the EUROGIN and during meeting I met representative from other Asian countries including China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia etc. The theme of the meeting was on the screening and management of the cervical cancer/premalignancy, use of HPV DNA in screening and HPV vaccines etc. Two HPV vaccines were undergoing phase III clinical trial and will be in market in few years time. If the vaccine is available, it will help to prevent premalignant and malignant disease of the cervix in our next generation. Please watch out for the next AOGIN meeting which will be held in Philippines next year.
In the first Council Meeting on 30 th May 2005, I, together with other council members, have mapped out our work plan for the next two years including: organization of academic meetings (responsible person: Dr. Au Yeung Kam Chuen), public lectures, revamp of our society website (Dr. May Chan), preparation of the Journal of Midwifery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics (Dr. Leung Kwok Yin) etc. If you have suggestions regarding the above items, please kindly contact the responsible person directly or through me (my email address: lamsk@ha.org.hk). Looking forward to your suggestions and your support to the OGSHK.

The new website address of OGSHK will be changed to: www.ogshk.org, which is easier to remember. Further upgrade of the website is being carried out by Dr. May Chan, our webmaster. More information will be put in our web in the future like the lecture PowerPoint slides and audio/video clip of the scientific/CME meeting. Members who cannot attend the actual meeting can still read the lecture presentation at a later date.
The OGSHK would like to welcome new members from doctors, nurses and health care workers. Please encourage your colleagues to join the family. Application form can be downloaded from our society website.
