Newsletter March 2006

Message from the President

This is my second Presidentˇ¦s message and first of all, let me extend my warmest wish for all of you in the Year of the Dog. Hope everyone will stay healthy (amid all the bird flu crisis which is slowly creeping into Hong Kong) and have an enjoyable year. The first main function of the OGSHK is to organize scientific/ CME/ CNE meetings. These meetings not only serve educational purpose but they will enhance fraternity among all our members. Members can meet and chat with each other after a busy day in clinic and hospital. Because of the rising economy, commercial sponsors are more eager to host scientific meetings together with the Society, so we will expect more meetings to be organized in the coming years. As some of our members may not be able to attend these CME meetings personally, we have try our best to obtain the PowerPoint slides of the speaker (subject to the approval of the speaker) and put in our Society website. Members can go through these lecture slides anytime after the meeting. In connection with the society website, I am glad to inform members that the whole site was revamped so as to make it more comprehensive to our members/public and to make it more user friendly. The website address has also been simplified (www.ogshk.org), please spend a few minutes to browse through it and if there is any comments you can send to me or the Webmaster Dr. May Chan. May is pivotal in the revamp of the Society website, without her help, this exercise will just be impossible.

The second main function of the Society is for liaison with other international O&G Societies. Dr. KM Mok and I represented OGSHK to attend the Seoul AOFOG meeting in October 2005. There were about 15 delegates from Hong Kong and our participation was quite active (as Session chairman, speakers and posters etc). Prof PC Ho was re-elected as Honorary Treasurer of the AOFOG. and Dr. Ernest Ng agreed to represent Hong Kong in the Reproductive Endocrinology Subcommittee of the AOFOG.. The next AOFOG meeting will be held in 2007 in Japan (The first FIGO meeting was also held in Japan 50 years ago) and in New Zealand in 2009.

The next FIGO meeting will be held in Kuala Lumpur this November and there would be a large delegation from Hong Kong. Please join the meeting as the scientific content and social functions are very good quality. Further detail/brochure available from the Honorary Secretary.

We also try to liaise with other health professional groups in HK and nearby region. On behalf of OGSHK, I attended the 50 th anniversary dinner of HK Society of Anaesthetists on 28 August 2005 and the annual dinner of HK Midwives Association on 17 Nov 2005. I was invited by Macau Chinese Medical Association to give a talk on PPH and hysteroscopy in last September and another talk on hypertension and pregnancy in March 2006. I also met some old friends who are also members of the Macau O&G Society (some are members of OGSHK as well!)

The third function of the OGSHK is for public education. This year Dr. Dominic Li and myself were invited to present some short Q&A in one of the TVB educational series. We talked about some of the common questions and worry of pregnant mother and parents.

This year we celebrate the 45 th anniversary of the OGSHK (1961-2006) and we hope to organize a celebration dinner in September. Further detail will be available later.

Because of the lack of permanent staff of the OGSHK, all the correspondence and clerical work are performed and contributed by volunteers. Special thank to Dr. Au Yeung Kam Chuen, our Honorary Secretary and Dr. May Chan, who overlooks our website and Dr. Mok who keep our books in healthy balance.

If you have suggestions regarding the above items, please kindly contact any council members or me (my email address: lamsk@ha.org.hk). Looking forward to your suggestions and your support to the OGSHK.

Dr Lam Siu Keung
President

News from Webmaster Dr. May Chan

Knowledge is King!
Information is Power!
All these emphasize the importance of knowing more. However, nowadays, we are living in an era with explosion of information, and entangled in the inter-NET.
Have you got the experience of surfing on the web to get information and get lost?
Have you come across of trying to get some information, only to worry later whether the information youˇ¦ve got is true or partly true?
For our society, we hope that we can make some contribution to this situation.

Starting from the New Year Day in 2006, there would be a major refurbishment of our Societyˇ¦s website/

For our members, there are a few updated features:

  1. The membersˇ¦ login id and password would be removed, so that members can visit the site at any time.
  2. We shall try to solicit from the speakers of our scientific meeting and allow us to put the lecture material on the web, so that those members who cannot attend but interested in the topic can refer to it later. Members who had attended can also refer to the slides afterwards, and save the effort of copying during the meeting. Just sit back and enjoy the talk.
  3. Useful and relevant websites links would be put on the web, so that members can easily refer to them for information. Members can send us links too, if they had located some useful and reliable websites.
  4. The contents of our society journal would be uploaded to the website in phases.
  5. Announcements such as details of our society scientific meeting and sponsorship for overseas meetings etc. would be put on the website, so please visit the site frequently.

For the public ˇV we also try to put up some educational information on the website in Chinese, or put in links to websites that are reliable and accurate. If any member comes across any useful sites, please also send us the information too.

The new website would be ready in the New Year Day 2006 ˇV our 45th year anniversary, and contents would be regularly updated. Your help and contribution is much appreciated.

Dr May Chan

P.S. We will try to demonstrate the new website in some of the OGSHK meetings

Old Photos Wanted

The OGSHK is having its 45th birthday but we did not have many photos in our archive especially in the early years (1961-70, 71-80). We will prepare a brochure for the 45 th anniversary of OGSHK and old photos/documents/newspaper clips relating to the past activity/meeting and past office bearers/members are wanted. You can either send me the digital photo or the ˇ§oldˇ¨ photos by ordinary mail and we will send you back the original by registered post. Please send to Dr. SK Lam by post (Dept of O&G, Kwong Wah Hospital, 25 Waterloo Road or by email: lamsk@ha.org.hk) preferably before 1 May 2006.

The OGSHK has acquired a series of video tape (for lay person) on the pregnancy (from first trimester to third trimester) and child care (from newborn to 18 months) and a video on breast-feeding. Any members who are interested to borrow for short term viewing can approach the Honorary Secretary or President.
