The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN)
SIGN was established in 1993 by the medical Royal Colleges to develop evidence based national guidelines for NHS Scotland. Saving Mothers' and Infants' Lives through Education
In 2005 the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists International Office launched a charitable initiative aimed at elevating the devastating problem of maternal mortality and its consequences. In 2010 their experiences and initiatives culminated in the founding of the SMILE Appeal.
The Appeal brings together expertise from a global network of expert colleagues, highly trained doctor volunteers working for free, and partner organisations such as The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to deliver education and training in pregnancy, delivery, contraception and sexual and reproductive healthcare in developing countries with the worst maternal and infant mortality records.
